Proper Care of a New Wood Floor

The National Wood Flooring Association has the following 10 tips for preventive maintenance of wood floors:

Proper care of a new wood floor
  1. Do not use sheet vinyl or tile floor care products on wood floors.
  2. Use throw rugs inside and outside doorways to reduce scratches from dirt, grit and debris
  3. Do not wet-mop a wood floor
  4. Immediately wipe up spills with a slightly damp towel
  5. Try buffing a dull floor rather than risk over-waxing
  6. Use soft plastic of fabric glides under the legs of furniture to prevent scuffing and scratching
  7. Avoid walking with cleats, sport shoes and high heels
  8. When moving furniture pick it up completely off the floor
  9. Place a rug over wood flooring in front of a kitchen sink
  10. Use a humidifier during the winter to minimize wood movement and shrinkage.
